Christ as… Sovereign?

This Sunday is the Reign of Christ — more traditionally known as Christ the King Sunday! Historically, it is a day of great celebration. Yet now we have a wary sense of Kings and kingship; maybe seen as threatening, intimidating, verging on tyrannical.

But what about Christ as Sovereign? Does that feel more positive?

To me, Sovereignty seems different from Christ as Monarch. Sovereign can connote caring, protecting, upholding rights. Sovereignty seems a better description of who our God is: Creator, Redeemer, Counselor, Advocate, Mother of us all. Sovereignty seems glorious, suggests a champion of our gifts, talents, life, and blessings.

Let us come together this week to consider how Christ as King or as Sovereign gives us hope, assurance, and our vocation.
