WINTER NIGHT SERVICE – TONIGHT AT 7PM

Please join us tonight in the chapel for a reflective service that offers quiet, peace, comfort, and hope in the midst of a season that seems to demand chaos and glee.

THIS SUNDAY AT ST. GREGORY’S

ADVENT MESSIAH CHOIR – 10AM

Come raise your voices in celebrating the expectant joy of Advent! Each Sunday in December, join the choir in singing an offertory anthem selected from one of the greatest masterworks, Handel's Messiah - culminating in a singalong Hallelujah Chorus with the brass quintet on Christmas Eve. The selections chosen are accessible to anyone with a little practice, so ALL are welcome!

If you're interested in singing with the choir during Advent and/or at the two Christmas Eve services, please contact Kathryn at kathryn@stgregoryschurch.org for a detailed schedule, practice recordings, and music. You don't have to come to all rehearsals, but the more you attend the more prepared you'll feel. This Sunday, you are welcome to join us at 9am to rehearse and see what it is like!

WELCOME NSUC 6/7TH GRADERS AT OUR 10AM SERVICE

Please welcome the 6/7th graders, their teachers and parents from the North Shore Unitarian Church on Half Day Road to our 10:00 service. We are grateful for their presence!

COMMUNITY MEALS – NOON

We will once again have the opportunity to serve our neighbors in Waukegan at the Soup Kitchen ministry.  We meet at 12 noon at Christ Church and are done around 3:30 pm.  We need help to prepare, serve and clean up the meal.  We also need volunteers to donate desserts.  Please sign up in Founder's Hall or contact Barb Schaper at bschaper7@aol.com.

YOUTH GROUP CHRISTMAS PARTY

This Sunday at 7:00! Bring your White Elephant Christmas gift (no more than $15 - re-gifting is fun too!) and wear your Christmas sweaters! We will have munchies and movies and games!

CHRISTMAS FLOWER & MUSIC: IN MEMORY OR FOR THANKSGIVING ENVELOPES AVAILABE

If you would like to honor a loved one this Christmas season, please look for an envelope in Founder’s Hall and complete the necessary information on the front. If you are unable to pick an envelope up at the Church, please contact Charlene (847-945-1350, parish@stgregoryschurch.org).

CHRISTMAS PAGEANT AT 3PM CHRISTMAS EVE SERVICE

We will have a Christmas pageant at the 3:00pm service on Christmas Eve this year. ALL children attending the service will be invited to participate in a simple way during the service. There will be narrators who will tell the story – they will be rehearsing ahead of time.  Shelley will be contacting folks individually about participating!

KNITTING MINISTRY MEETING TWICE A MONTH

The Knitting Ministry has agreed to meet twice a month instead of just once a month due to new members who wish to learn to knit and want to practice with more experienced knitters! Join us at 6:00 pm on December 18 in the Parker Room. All ages and skill levels are welcome!

FUN NIGHT FOR ALL AGES – JANUARY 11, 6-8PM

Mark your Calendar for Family Fun Night on January 11 from 6 - 8! We will be hosting families from Christ United Methodist Church in an evening of food, games and fellowship! We will provide food (asking for a good will offering) and then spend time playing board/card games and coloring together! A signup sheet will be in Founders' Hall after Christmas.

ALTAR FLOWER DONARS NEED

If you would like to be an altar flower donor on December 30th or January 6th, please contact Val Seilheimer (valscello1@aol.com).

PADS VOLUNTEERS NEEDED AT FIRST PRESBYTERIAN (DEERFIELD) ON 2ND SUNDAYS/MONDAYS

First Presbyterian has asked St. Gregory's to assist with cleaning up after the PADS breakfasts on the Mondays after the 2nd Sundays of each month through April 2019.  The congregation providing breakfast on those Mondays could use an extra couple volunteers to run the sanitizer (David Schaper can give you a lesson) and put away the dishes (Sarah Snyder can provide further details).

The time commitment is roughly 1-2 hours once a month on a Monday morning:  the volunteer running the sanitizer is usually available 5:15 AM - 6:45 AM (done by 7 AM) and the other helper is needed from about 5:30 AM - 6:45 AM (again, done by 7 AM).  The dates in 2019 are: January 14, February 11, March 11 and April 15.

If you are interested in helping with this important ministry on one of these dates, please contact Sarah Snyder (sesnyder67@gmail.com).

VESTRY NOMINATIONS PROCESS AND SERVICE

At our Annual Parish Meeting on January 27th next year, parishioners will vote on a slate of new members for the Vestry to include a new Warden and one to two new Vestry Members. To begin discernment for these new leaders, the Parish Nominating Committee, consisting of the outgoing Warden (that's me, Leigh Stewart!) and Vestry Members along with our Rector Anne, met on November 13 to prayerfully consider and lift up names of recommended parishioners for this ministry. The Parish Nominating Committee invites parishioners to contact Leigh Stewart at 847-846-5162 with names of potential candidates for Warden and Vestry service.  We ask that parishioners who nominate candidates not speak to the candidates about their nomination in order to avoid hurt feelings if the person is not selected for the slate.

The leadership of our Vestry is vital to the life of our church, and a representation of those first disciples long ago who answered Jesus' call to serve in a leadership role. The Vestry is made up of the Rector, two duly elected Wardens, and duly elected Vestry Members who serve on a three-year rotation. To serve on the Vestry in our Diocese of the Episcopal Church, one must:

·  Be a baptized person aged 16 years or older who

·  Regularly attends services and

·  Is recognized as members of the Parish by the Rector and at least one of the Wardens and

·  Is a 'giver of record' financially during the 6 months prior to the annual meeting.

A comprehensive Ministry description for Wardens and Vestry Members is posted on the Vestry bulletin outside the Rector's office.

I would like to take this opportunity to say that serving with this Vestry has caused me to grow spiritually and personally in ways that I could never have foreseen and I am deeply grateful for this experience and for my fellow leaders.  Joining this Vestry is one of the most rewarding efforts you will ever experience, forging new and lasting friendships and feeling a true part of the body of Christ.  If you receive the call to serve in this way, I strongly encourage you to consider that call as maybe coming from Jesus and respond as those first disciples did.  It is a great adventure!

Yours in Christ,

Leigh Stewart

WEDNESDAY MORNING WORSHIP& BREAKFAST TIME CHANGE TO 8:00AM

The Wednesday morning service followed by a continental breakfast is being held at a new time – 8am! We hope this allows some of us (yawn) who prefer to sleep in a little to attend! Please join us, perhaps as an Advent spiritual practice!

LAKE FOREST EXPLORING GRIEF GROUP – JANUARY 2, 3PM

Are you or someone you know grieving the loss of a family member, partner, or friend? If so, find comfort in our Lake Forest Exploring Grief Group. Area congregations are supporting this community program, making it available at no charge to participants. Our Exploring Grief Group provides a confidential, educational, and nonjudgmental environment. It encourages attendees to come to terms with the tremendous loss they are experiencing and continue to find meaning in their lives. This group is led by a professional counselor. The winter session will be held at St. James Lutheran Church and will take place from January 2 - March 13. This group will meet every other Wednesday from 3pm-4:30pm. To register, please contact Denise Kitanovski, JD, MA, LCPC at 847-446-6955, ext. 22 or dkitanovski@northshoresamaritan.org.

INTERFAITH SYMPOSIUM AT BJBE – TUESDAYS, 10-11:30AM

In an America that seems to be fracturing along cultural, political, and geographical lines, we have the opportunity to act bravely and wisely by learning with and from people who think and act differently than we do. Over the course of this year, we will hear from clergy and leaders from many faith traditions. We will learn about their history, their inspirational texts, the major tenets of their theology, and what teachings their tradition can bring to bear on the most important questions and challenges of religious life in 21st Century America. Symposium will be taught by some of Chicagoland’s leading clergy, including our rector, Anne Jolly! BJBE is inviting members of congregations to join them in this informative series. We hope we will get to know our neighbors through learning, conversation, and, of course, a little nosh. You are welcome to any and all of the sessions!

Registration is available online: https://bjbe.shulcloud.com/form/symposium1819.
