Parish Newsletter

Welcome to the weekly parish newsletter of St. Gregory's Episcopal Church in Deerfield, Illinois.

Parish Newsletter 10/24/18 - WORK IN THE PATCH & SHARE GOD’S GRACE!

WORK IN THE PATCH – SHARE GOD’S GRACE!

All parishioners who are physically able are encouraged to sign up for at least one 2-hour shift in our pumpkin patch. This is our most visible opportunity to share St. Gregory’s and God’s grace with our neighbors – and it is a fundraiser for our beloved Youth Group’s trips. Spend time with fellow parishioners, and get to know our neighbors. It’s easy, and it can be very fun! There are MANY open shifts for this coming week. You can sign up in Founder's Hall or click here to sign up on line!

ANNE JOLLY PREACHING AT BJBE SHABBAT SERVICE, FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 2, 7:30PM

Congregation BJBE (1201 Lake Cook Rd) invites St.Gregory’s parishioners to come to their Friday evening Musical Shabbat service at 7:30 pm. Mtr. Anne has been invited to preach at the service. You may remember that their lead Rabbi, Karyn Kedar preached at St. G’s this year, and that several of their congregants came to St. G’s. They are delighted to return the hospitality. Shabbat is followed by a time of fellowship with refreshments – it will be fun for us all to understand each other better and enjoy time together!

ALL SOULS DAY HONORS LOVED ONES –SUBMIT NAMES AND BRING PICTURES – NOVEMBER 4

On November 4th, we will celebrate the combined feast of All Souls and All Saints. It is a St. Gregory’s tradition to read the names of those who have died in the past year, and those who are buried in our churchyard. We will be reading the names at both services. If you would like to have a loved one’s name read, please fill out an envelope by October 30. You may also make a donation to St. Gregory’s in their memory.

Additionally, we will have a table set up in the chapel to display pictures of our loved ones so we can have them visually present while they are spiritually present in the liturgy. Please bring your pictures with you to the service (framed or unframed, big, little, or in between!), and we will put the pictures on the altar after we read the names. Any questions, contact Charlene at 847-945-1678.

TAX REFORM DISCUSSION – SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 11:15AM

On November 4th, Donna Shelton will lead a discussion of the financial implications of this year’s tax reform laws. It will be helpful to all of us as we look at wrapping up the calendar year financially. She will lead this discussion during Coffee Hour.

COMMUNITY MEALS: NEXT TIME TO SERVE – OCTOBER 28, NOON

New volunteers VERY WELCOME! St. Gregory’s has the opportunity to prepare and serve a warm meal to our neighbors in Waukegan. We gather at Christ Church, Waukegan at noon. We prepare a meal (menu already selected, and jobs easily assigned based on skill!), then serve the meal and interact with the neighbors who come to receive the food. We are done with clean up by 3:30pm. This is a great opportunity to put our faith in action, and develop relationships with people in Waukegan. Children who are comfortable in a kitchen are welcome! For those who cannot be present in Waukegan, there is also the opportunitiy to make desserts for us to take to the meal. Signup sheets will be in Founders’ Hall, and help us make sure we have work for everyone to do. You can also contact Barb Schaper at bschaper7@aol.com.

OLDER ADULT OUTREACH SPECIAL EVENT: STAY CREEPY! – OCTOBER 29, 12:30PM

Join Faith in Action Volunteers for a Halloween Party sponsored by St. Gregory’s on Monday, October 29, 12:30pm, in Founders’ Hall. Festivities include refreshments, a reptile road show, costume awards, and trick or treating. We would like to have parishioners help host the event, and to attend! RSVP to Charlene to attend or help host (847-945-1678). This is a wonderful opportunity to make new friends and have a good time!

TIME TO WINTERIZE ST GREGORY’S

We still have to wash and install several storm windows before winter. With a few helpers the job takes less than two hours.   November 1 or 2 would be good, but time and date can still be agreed on.  If you can help, call or message John Welker at 847 899 7350.

RED BAG SUNDAY – NOVEMBER 4

Our Feed the Hungry Red Bags on November 4 will go to the Deerfield Food Pantry. They are in need of: canned fruit and applesauce, cereal, canisters of oatmeal, pasta and pasta sauce, tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, canned sweet peas, cans of coffee, paper towels, toilet paper and as always, grocery gift cards.  Please remember the hungry and need when you do your grocery shopping.

WOMEN’S WINE AND WORD – BIBLE STUDY – THROUGH NOVEMBER 8, 7-8:30PM

All women are invited to participate in a 5 week study of the Book of Ruth on Thursday nights from 7-8:30pm. We will be meeting St. Gregory’s. If interested, contact Mother Anne anne@stgregoryschurch.org. The group will not be meeting on October 25, but will resume the following week (November 1).

OPPORTUNITY TO PROVIDE CHRISTMAS GIFTS

We have the names of 10 seniors and 30 families who are in need of gifts for Christmas.  The families range in size from 2 to 8, most with single parents and a few with 2 parents.

The sign-up sheet will be in Founder’s Hall.  Please print your name and e-mail address on the sign-up sheet.  Marilyn will send you the information about your family, and all of the instructions necessary. Your baskets will be due to church during the first week of December.

If you have any questions about the family you will receive or about the program, please contact me at marilyn17@comcast.com or at 847-945-5068.  Thank you in advance for supporting this program

ADVENT MESSIAH CHOIR

Come raise your voices in celebrating the expectant joy of Advent! Each Sunday in December, join the choir in singing an offertory anthem selected from one of the greatest masterworks, Handel's Messiah - culminating in a singalong Hallelujah Chorus with the brass quintet on Christmas Eve. The selections chosen are accessible to anyone with a little practice, so ALL are welcome!

If you're interested in singing with the choir during Advent and/or at the two Christmas Eve services, please contact Kathryn at kathryn@stgregoryschurch.org for a detailed schedule, practice recordings, and music. You don't have to come to all rehearsals, but the more you attend the more prepared you'll feel.

BOOK CLUB – DECEMBER 5, 7PM

Because of Thanksgiving, the next Book Club meeting will be held on December 5. “Holy Rover” by Lori Erickson will be discussed. Several copies are available in the church library. The Book Club normally meets on the 3rd Wednesdays of each month at 7pm in the Conference Room, at St. Gregory’s.

INTERFAITH SYMPOSIUM AT BJBE – TUESDAYS, 10-11:30AM

In an America that seems to be fracturing along cultural, political, and geographical lines, we have the opportunity to act bravely and wisely by learning with and from people who think and act differently than we do. Over the course of this year, we will hear from clergy and leaders from many faith traditions. We will learn about their history, their inspirational texts, the major tenets of their theology, and what teachings their tradition can bring to bear on the most important questions and challenges of religious life in 21st Century America. Symposium will be taught by some of Chicagoland’s leading clergy, including our rector, Anne Jolly! BJBE is inviting members of congregations to join them in this informative series. We hope we will get to know our neighbors through learning, conversation, and, of course, a little nosh. You are welcome to any and all of the sessions!

Registration is available online: https://bjbe.shulcloud.com/form/symposium1819.

VESTRY MEETING NEWS

Our Vestry met on October 9 and we have two key highlights to share:

We encourage all parishioners to participate in our annual Fall Pumpkin Patch.   Please consider taking a few 2 Hour shifts to sell pumpkins to our neighbors.  Also go to Facebook and find the St. Gregory Pumpkin Patch site and share it with your friends. Our Pumpkin Patch is our most important fundraiser to help our Family Ministries.  It is also a way to meet and be with our community.  And it’s fun!  The Vestry says thank you to all the people who helped unload the truck last Saturday.

A Family Ministries Leadership Team Charter has been drafted.  St. Gregory’s Family Ministries exist to inspire, support, and connect families in Deerfield and surrounding areas to build and share faith and meaningful relationships.  Please help support our Family Ministries by participating in activities and speaking with Shelley to ask how you can contribute to our success.
