IT’S SUICIDE PREVENTION MONTH. JOIN US FOR A PANEL DISCUSSION – SEPTEMBER 26, 7PM
Sponsored by Moms Demand Action
Two-thirds of all gun deaths are suicides and over 90% of suicides attempted with a firearm are successful. As part of Moms Demand Action's mission to reduce Gun Violence, we want to engage in suicide prevention as well. On September 26, we have a great opportunity to hear from a Suicide Survivor, a therapist and author who specializes in Suicide Prevention, and a Suicide Prevention Organization, Sip of Hope. We'll hear about warning signs, how to best support someone who may be contemplating suicide, and how to approach the topic that is too often "taboo" - in a sensitive way. Let's together help remove the stigma around mental health and bring this important topic out into the light. WARNING: please use discernment in bringing children. Speakers may be sharing details which could be graphic or disturbing to children at times. Of course we know that this topic is and should be on the minds of teens and they are welcome, but please consider if your child is emotionally ready to handle this topic before bringing them. EPISCOPAL HURRICANE RELIEF FUND
We respond to storms in the United States and U.S. territories through our U.S. Disaster Program. Through our partnerships with Episcopal dioceses, we offer resources and training to help people prepare for disasters and provide emergency support so vulnerable people can make a sustained recovery after the storm. The benefit of our partnership with Episcopal churches is that these congregations are already deeply integrated within their communities. In other words, the Episcopal Church is there before responders arrive and will remain long after the news cameras have gone. You can help provide critical relief to affected communities by donating to our Hurricane Relief Fund. To donate and read the latest updates, visit https://support.episcopalrelief.org/hurricane-relief.
If you choose to write a check for the relief fund PLEASE make check payable to St. Gregory’s Episcopal Church, and write Hurricane Relief in the memo section.

PREPARE TO VOTE ON PROPOSED PARISH CONSTITUTION AT OUR ANNUAL MEETING ON JAN. 27
The purpose of our Parish Constitution is similar to the articles of incorporation for a company. We define our name, governance, officers, how officers are chosen and requirements for our meetings. St. Gregory’s original Parish Constitution was adopted in the mid-1950’s. Changes to our Parish Constitution require a full parish meeting to vote on adopting the changes. At our upcoming Annual Meeting on January 27, we will be voting on a Proposed Parish Constitution.
This past year the Vestry undertook an update of our Parish Constitution in order to:
Large sections of our original constitution had been copied directly from the diocesan canons in effect at that time. In this revision each of those sections has been replaced by a reference to the current appropriate diocesan canon. The use of references will keep us in alignment with the diocese without having to make revisions to our constitution.
To enable you to make an informed vote, we have prepared the following versions for your review:
Please take the time to review these versions prior to our Annual Meeting on January 27.

ALTAR FLOWER DONORS NEED
If you would like to be an altar flower donor on December 30th or January 6th, please contact Val Seilheimer (valscello1@aol.com).
PLEASE MAIL IN YOUR PLEDGE!
We have about 60% of pledges in and would like to get the rest before January 4. Pledging is an important spiritual practice because it involves reflecting on all the gifts God has given us and, in prayer, determining what we will give to God’s work in and through St. Gregory’s in 2019. Pledge cards are available on the table outside the sacristy, by the sign up sheets and on St. Greg’s Table in Founders Hall. Thanks for joining us at St. Greg’s Table! ~ The Vestry
NEXT COMMUNITY MEALS – FEBRUARY 17
Our soup kitchen volunteers this past Sunday were Amy and Josephine Call, Scott Hamilton, Janet and Bill Foltz, Debbie and John Welker, Sybil Ten Eyck, Barb, Matthew and Scott Schaper. Thanks to the following people who donated desserts: Debbie Welker, Lynne Pike, Schapers, Carol Porter, Lisa Halpin, Mary Keller, Karen Nicholas, Scott Hamilton and Sybil Ten Eyck. Our next opportunity to serve is February 17th.
Janet and Bill Foltz and Barb Schaper
Our Vestry met on December 11:
To date, our giving campaign has received 60% of pledges. We want to thank those people who have taken a seat at St. Greg’s table through their generous offerings. Those of you who have not yet pledged, please do so soon, so that we have a good understanding of our 2019 budget to start the year. We believe God has called St. Gregory’s to many ministries in this year, including expanding our hospitality and love to the community beyond our walls. Your generosity enables that to happen, and gives you an opportunity to expand your faith!
We want to say thank you to the parishioners who attended the St. Gregory’s Faith in Action Listening Session last month. The St. Gregory’s Faith in Action task force will be presenting the Vision, Guidelines, proposed Process Outline, and Next Steps at the 2019 Annual Meeting.
VESTRY NOMINATIONS PROCESS AND SERVICE
At our Annual Parish Meeting on January 27th next year, parishioners will vote on a slate of new members for the Vestry to include a new Warden and one to two new Vestry Members. To begin discernment for these new leaders, the Parish Nominating Committee, consisting of the outgoing Warden (that's me, Leigh Stewart!) and Vestry Members along with our Rector Anne, met on November 13 to prayerfully consider and lift up names of recommended parishioners for this ministry. The Parish Nominating Committee invites parishioners to contact Leigh Stewart at 847-846-5162 with names of potential candidates for Warden and Vestry service. We ask that parishioners who nominate candidates not speak to the candidates about their nomination in order to avoid hurt feelings if the person is not selected for the slate.
The leadership of our Vestry is vital to the life of our church, and a representation of those first disciples long ago who answered Jesus' call to serve in a leadership role. The Vestry is made up of the Rector, two duly elected Wardens, and duly elected Vestry Members who serve on a three-year rotation. To serve on the Vestry in our Diocese of the Episcopal Church, one must:
· Be a baptized person aged 16 years or older who
· Regularly attends services and
· Is recognized as members of the Parish by the Rector and at least one of the Wardens and
· Is a 'giver of record' financially during the 6 months prior to the annual meeting.
A comprehensive Ministry description for Wardens and Vestry Members is posted on the Vestry bulletin outside the Rector's office.
I would like to take this opportunity to say that serving with this Vestry has caused me to grow spiritually and personally in ways that I could never have foreseen and I am deeply grateful for this experience and for my fellow leaders. Joining this Vestry is one of the most rewarding efforts you will ever experience, forging new and lasting friendships and feeling a true part of the body of Christ. If you receive the call to serve in this way, I strongly encourage you to consider that call as maybe coming from Jesus and respond as those first disciples did. It is a great adventure!
Yours in Christ,
Leigh Stewart

First Presbyterian has asked St. Gregory's to assist with cleaning up after the PADS breakfasts on the Mondays after the 2nd Sundays of each month through April 2019. The time commitment is roughly 1-2 hours once a month on a Monday morning: the volunteer running the sanitizer is usually available 5:15 AM - 6:45 AM (done by 7 AM) and the other helper is needed from about 5:30 AM - 6:45 AM (again, done by 7 AM). DISCOVERING OUR NERVE: BISHOP LEE’S CONVENTION SERMON
The 181ST Annual Convention of Chicago took place November 16 and 17 at the Westin Yorktown Center in Lombard.
"So I've got a charge for us, church," said Bishop Lee in his convention sermon. "Let's recover or discover our nerve, our confidence that God has given us a way of being Christian, a way of following Christ that leads to life, a way of living not for ourselves alone but for the One who died for us and was raised again."

A FUTURE WITH HOPE: THE REV. ANNE JOLLY’S CONVENTION MORNING PRAYER SERMON
In her sermon at an opening liturgy, The Rev. Anne Jolly called the convention's attention to the plight of refugees making their way toward the southern border of the United States. "The Israelites may have worn sandals and carried their belongings in cloth bundles while the refugees in the caravan wear flip flops and crocs and carry their belongings in back packs, but we know they are the same in so many ways. We can see the fear and desperation mixed with the dust on the roads they all walk."

PLEASE HELP YOUR 2018 VESTRY
The main role of the Vestry is to discern God's will in how we at St. Gregory's achieve our mission and live out our core values. To help us do that, the Vestry invites each and every parishioner to pray for us, just as we are responsible for praying daily for St. Gregory's parishioners. We also invite each parishioner to talk with at least one vestry member prior to March 9 - that is when we go on retreat to discern our goals for 2018 and beyond - so we really want to hear your thoughts about St. Gregory's before that! Thank you in advance for your help!"
Our Vestry members are Michele Appelbaum, Julie Ann Ariano, Ed Bayer, Caroline Bielski, Nancy Buller, Kevin Christenson, Bill Foltz, Kelly Gearhart Mike Hamilton (Warden), Scott Hamilton, Ann Jolly (Rector), Dan Nicholas, Scott Schaper, Ob Soonthornsima, Leigh Stewart (Warden).
Please call the Parish Office at 847-945-1608 to receive the phone number of the Vestry member you would like to call.

INTERFAITH DISCUSSION ON GUN VIOLENCE – FEBRUARY 21, 7PM
As we all know from the tragedy this week in Florida, Gun Violence is a problem that America continues to deal with. Gun Violence is now the number one cause of death for children in Illinois. Doctors are declaring Gun Violence a public health epidemic in the US. We all know this is a problem, but there are no easy answers. Join us at this Interfaith Discussion on the topic of Gun Violence to see how a local Rabbi, an Imam, a Reverend and a Sikh are approaching solutions to gun violence driven by their faith tradition. Sponsored by Moms Demand Action of the Chicago North Suburbs, Wednesday, February 21, 7-8:30pm, Libertyville Civic Center, 135 W. Church St., Libertyville. RSVP:https://tinyurl.com/yb3eqqbs and contact Jenny Stadelmann at DeerfieldDemandsAction@gmail.com with questions.
DO YOU HAVE KEYS TO THE CHURCH?
If so, please contact Charlene (parish@stgregoryschurch.org, 847-945-1678) as we are trying to take inventory. If you no longer use your key, please consider returning it as soon as possible. Thanks!
MAKE A JOYFUL NOISE UNTO THE LORD – AND HAVE FUN DOING IT!
Music can be one of the most empowering and transformative aspects of the worship experience - it moves us in ways that words often cannot. This year, I invite you all to join with me in making Colossians 3:16 the cornerstone of our musical worship at St. Gregory’s: "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God." Music embeds the word of Christ deeply into our hearts, it facilitates both teaching and learning, and can be one of the more profound ways we pray to God. One excellent way you can enjoy its blessing is by singing in the choir! I know there are plenty of reasons to NOT sing in choir, but (spoiler alert): those reasons aren’t very good. :)
So why SHOULD you sing in choir? Maybe singing is a skill you've always wanted to learn, maybe you sang/played an instrument in school and would like to rediscover an old talent, or maybe you've never sung in a choir before and are just curious what it'd be like. :) Or maybe you're giving up a vice for Lent (like your fear of public singing!) and suddenly feel a little extra motivation to "let the word of Christ dwell in your richly." :) Join us for a Sunday or two and find out for yourself! If you’re on the fence or want more info, email me at kathryn@stgregoryschurch.org or visit this link to join an email list for occasional updates on what the choir is singing in upcoming weeks/months!
At its meeting on February 13, your Vestry:
· Elected Nancy Buller as Treasurer and Ed Bayer as Clerk. Each year at its first meeting the new vestry is required by our parish constitution to elect the Treasurer and Clerk for the coming year. We also approved a Bank Resolution to update signatories on bank and securities transactions.
· Approved the Rectory Renovation Project which will make long overdue improvements to the kitchen and master bath in the Rectory. Funding is available through Endowment Fund draws designated for this purpose from the years 2017, 2016, 2013, and the Major Improvements account.
· Discussed needs for Children’s Church Leaders & an additional member on the Design Team. For Children's Church, the children and leaders leave after the Gospel and mirror what we do while they are gone, but in an age-adjusted way. We are considering having a team of 4-6 people as Children's Church Leaders who will be trained by Mother Anne and rotate Sundays. The Design Team needs a process-oriented person to join them in developing the structure for our new Family Ministry which is a very important initiative for our church life. Anyone interested in learning more about these opportunities to serve please contact Mother Anne (anne@stgregoryschurch.org).

SCOTT AND CINDY TAKE A SABBATH LEAVE.
As announced on Sunday, January 29, Deacon Scott Elliott and his wife Cindy Cheski will be taking sabbath time this Summer and Fall. Specifically, their last Sunday with us will be Trinity Sunday, May 27, and they will return on Advent 1, December 2.
It is an ordinary thing for clergy, like college faculty, to take leave from time to time, for rest and refreshment, to complete special projects, or simply to take a step back to get perspective. Their last (and only!) one was almost ten years ago when they were at St Peter’s. The purpose of this time is simply to step back a bit, relax, reconnect with God and one another, and return.
SPIRITUAL CARE VISITOR TRAINING 2018
Spiritual Care Visitor Training is open to all who wish to add more tools to their pastoral care skills toolbox. You will be exposed to the Active Listening technique that will change how you communicate with others forever. Learn how to better understand the cognitively impaired and elderly, and get important skills in assisting with those who are facing death and those who will grieve their loss. The training is ideal for people serving on Pastoral Care Teams, or for congregations who wish to serve others more deeply.
Bishop Anderson House presents this 10-week class every Saturday, February 24 to May 5. Choose between meeting at St. James Commons (65 E. Huron, Chicago) or St. Simon's Episcopal Church (Arlington Heights).
The St. James course will meet from 9:30 to 12 in Kyle's place, on the main level of the Commons at 65 E. Huron. The 10-week course runs on Saturdays, from February 24 through May 5th.
If you are nearer the northwest suburbs, join us at St. Simon's, 717 W Kirchoff Rd, Arlington Heights. That class will be held Saturday afternoons, 1:30 to 4 p.m., also Feb. 24 to May 5.
After 10 weeks of course work and weekly 2 hour volunteer work at a field site, you will be well prepared to serve in your congregation and community. You will develop a comfort level and ability to be a ministry of presence and peace whether you visit people in a medical facility or in their homes.
Tuition is $325, plus an additional non-refundable $50 for the Diocese of Chicago credit check. Clergy or professional chaplains must sign the application and supervise each student during the course. Applications are due February 1. Students select their own field site for volunteer work during the training. Call the church office (847-945-1678) if interested.
